The One Thing I’m Strict About: Our Nighttime Routine

If there is one thing I am strict about with my boys, it is their nighttime routine.
Our days can be busy, loud, messy, and unpredictable—especially with three little boys in the house. But when bedtime rolls around, I try to keep things calm and consistent. A familiar routine helps everyone slow down, settle in, and understand that it is time for sleep.
Our routine is simple: a warm bath, cozy lotion, clean pajamas, a sleep sack, a bedtime story, lullabies, and then bed.

Why Our Nighttime Routine Matters
I truly believe that consistency at bedtime makes a difference. It doesn’t mean every night goes perfectly, because life with little kids is rarely perfect. Someone may be overtired, a bath might get extra splashy, or we may read the same book three times—but the basic routine stays the same.
Repeating the same steps each night gives my boys a sense of comfort and lets them know what is coming next. Bath time signals that the busy part of the day is ending. Pajamas and lotion help us transition into a calmer mood. Books and lullabies give us a few quiet moments together before it is time to sleep.
It has become a routine that helps me slow down, too. Even after a chaotic day, bedtime gives us a chance to reconnect and end the day with comfort and love.
Our Nighttime Routine
1. A Warm Bath
We start with a warm bath using a gentle body wash. Bath time helps wash away the food, sunscreen, dirt, and everything else that comes with a full day of being little.
Of course, bath time with boys is not always peaceful—it usually includes plenty of splashing! But once they are clean and out of the tub, the energy begins to shift toward bedtime.
2. Cozy Lotion and Pajamas
After their bath, I use a cozy body lotion and get them dressed in soft pajamas. I love this part because it feels like a little moment of care at the end of the day.
The familiar scent of their lotion has also become part of their bedtime cue. Once the lotion and pajamas come out, they know it is almost time to settle down.
3. Sleep Sacks
Sleep sacks are one of my favorite parts of our routine for the babies. They keep them comfortable and cozy without using a loose blanket in the crib.
Putting on their sleep sacks has become another familiar signal that bedtime is coming. I always choose one that fits properly and is appropriate for their age, size, and room temperature.
4. A Bedtime Story
Once everyone is clean and cozy, we read a bedtime story. Some nights we read something new, and other nights we read the same favorite book we have already read a hundred times.
This is one of my favorite parts of the routine because it gives us a chance to sit together without the distractions of the day. Even when bedtime feels rushed, I try to make time for at least one story.
5. Lullabies and Bedtime
After our story, I sing a few lullabies, give everyone kisses, and tuck them into bed. We turn on the sound machine, dim the lights, and say goodnight.
A sound machine has been especially helpful in our house because it creates a consistent sleep environment and helps soften the everyday noises that come with having multiple children at home.
Not every bedtime is effortless, but following the same routine each night makes it feel more manageable. The boys know what to expect, and I know that we are ending the day in a calm and loving way.
Our Favorite Nighttime-Routine Essentials
These are the products we currently use and love during our nighttime routine:
Mustela Body Wash
We use Mustela body wash during bath time. I like having a gentle wash that works well for the babies’ skin and fits easily into our everyday routine.
Mustela Body Lotion
After bath time, I use Mustela body lotion before putting on their pajamas. It leaves their skin feeling soft, and applying it has become part of our cozy bedtime rhythm.
Angelcare Bath Seat
The Angelcare bath seat makes bathing the babies easier and gives them support while I wash them. I still keep a hand close and supervise them the entire time—bath seats are helpful tools, but they never replace hands-on adult supervision.
Sleep Sacks
Sleep sacks are a must-have in our house. They help the babies feel cozy while keeping their sleep space free from loose blankets. I recommend checking the manufacturer’s sizing and safety guidance to choose the right sleep sack for your baby.
For sleep sacks, we used the Love to Dream sleep sack during the newborn stage, which is designed to help with the startle reflex. Once the babies started showing signs of trying to roll, I transitioned them out of swaddling and into these bamboo sleep sacks.
Sound Machine
Our sound machine is another bedtime essential. We use it every night to create a familiar, calming background sound and help minimize noises from the rest of the house. We keep it at a safe volume and place it away from the babies’ cribs.
We finish the routine with our Momcozy sound machine to keep the room calm and consistent for bedtime.
A Routine Doesn’t Have to Be Perfect to Work
If your evenings feel chaotic, you do not need an elaborate bedtime routine. Start with a few simple steps that you can repeat consistently. It might be a bath, pajamas, one book, and a song—or whatever works best for your family.
For us, the routine is less about following a perfect schedule and more about creating a feeling: clean, cozy, calm, safe, and ready for sleep.
Our days with three little boys may be full of noise and surprises, but bedtime is the one part of the day I try to protect. A good bath, cozy pajamas, a story, lullabies, and lots of goodnight kisses help us finish even the busiest days on a peaceful note.
